7/24/11 Normandy

Today we drove to Normandy Beach, the site of D-Day.  The mayor of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer had a ceremony just for us on the beach. During the ceremony they raised the flags of all of the countries that helped France during the war.  It made me sad to know the end of 1000's of lives happened right here and I wonder why we can't all just get along.

Following a WWII theme, we went to the Memorial Museum in Caen.  It was shocking, disturbing, and scary.

Next we went to the Normandy American Cemetery.  It was very moving and sad.

I really liked that there were crosses as well at the Star of David!

row upon row of grave markers

I thanked the person for what they did and also for letting me sit on their grave

There were not many women who died here

a little humor to break up the seriousness of it all

We went to another small museum after the cemetery.

We had to say good bye to Bob and our awesome bus.  He wasn't able to travel to England with us.  I cried quite a bit saying good bye to him because Bob rocks!

At 10 pm we boarded an overnight  ferry bound for Portsmouth, England.  Our curfew on the boat was 11 pm.  We had a dance party and it was a lot of fun.  The rooms on the boat were very small.  Four of us shared a room with two sets of bunk beds.  I took a bottom bunk.  Tomorrow, England!
