7/17/11 Rudesheim, Germany and the Rhine River

Today we had some  down time and went to swim at a local pool.  Here is the scenery on the way to the pool.

We swam for about an hour.  There was only one changing room for boys and girls at the pool.  It had a bunch of individual stalls though.  After swimming we headed to Rudesheim.  It was a long ride!

Once we got there we had about half an hour before lunch.  I took these pictures on the way to our restaurant.

It was like Christmas in July there!

and Mrs. Bluhm took these

Lunch was wiener schnitzel and sour kraut.  I really liked the wiener schnitzel.  It was a thin breaded beef that was fried.  YUM!  I didn't like the sour kraut though.

After lunch we had a little shopping time.  This picture is for my dad.

I like how the tower seems old and the clock seems modern.  They didn't seem like they belonged together.

There was also time for some ice cream.  This was the BEST ice cream EVER!
Next we got to go on a paddle boat and cruise the Rhine River.  We sat on the top floor.  I think the cruise was about two hours.

There was a lot to see.
These were docks that the cruise lines had to stop and pick people up a long the way.
I think we saw a castle about every five minutes, really!  I was surprised at how many castles there were, and how close together they were.  It was hard to believe that they were actually someones house a long time ago.

One of my leaders, Mrs. Bluhm.

When there were no more announcements (in three different languages even) we played Go Fish with Mathias.
We had dinner on the boat too.  It was some type of chicken dish.

Once we got off the boat, we drove a short distance to our hotel in Cologne, Germany.  It was the night of the World Cup, so our curfew was extended until the end of the World Cup!  We watched it in the hotel room and had snacks too.  The leaders let us go next door and order pizza.  I was disappointed that the USA lost to Japan, but it was fun having a little party!
